How to Find Motivation for Weight Loss in Midlife (Even When You’re Stuck)

Dec 18, 2024

Let’s talk about motivation—or the lack of it—because if you’re anything like me or the women I coach, it comes and goes, especially in midlife. There are days when we’re ready to conquer it all: meal prepping, movement, staying on plan. And then there are days when even thinking about doing one more thing feels overwhelming.

Here’s the good news: you don’t have to be motivated to make progress. You don’t have to wait for the stars to align. You can still make choices that move you forward—even if you’re tired, unmotivated, or just feeling stuck.

Let me walk you through some simple strategies that have helped me, my clients, and other midlife women keep showing up, even when motivation is elusive.

Why Is Motivation Harder in Midlife?

Motivation is tricky for women in midlife because we’re often juggling all the things. Hormonal changes, weight gain, caring for parents or kids, demanding work schedules—it’s no wonder we feel burned out and exhausted.

On top of that, you might feel like your body is working against you. What used to work for weight loss doesn’t seem to anymore, and that can make it even harder to get motivated. But here’s the shift: instead of waiting for motivation, focus on taking action. Small, doable steps create momentum, and momentum brings results.

1. Reconnect to Your Why

One of the most powerful tools to move forward is revisiting your why. Why do you want to take care of yourself? Why do you want to lose weight, feel strong, and stay healthy?

For one of my clients, her motivation came from a clear image of her mother’s later years. Her mom’s frail, declining health gave her a new reason to show up for herself: she didn’t want to end up the same way. Instead, she wanted to be strong and active, able to get down on the floor and play with her grandkids.

Take a moment to write down your why:

  • Do you want to have energy to play with your grandkids?
  • Do you want to feel confident and strong in your body?
  • Do you want to protect your long-term health and independence?

Whenever you lose momentum, come back to this why. It’s your anchor on the days when motivation feels far away.

2. Take Baby Steps (1% Changes Add Up)

When motivation is low, the worst thing you can do is set a massive, unrealistic goal. Now is not the time to start a 4-day workout routine, bake sourdough, and whip up cultured veggies.

Instead, focus on 1% improvements. Small, achievable goals that you can actually do—even on hard days.

Here are some examples:

  • For Food: Use pre-planned menus or order healthy groceries online.
  • For Movement: Commit to a daily walk (even just 10-15 minutes).
  • For Strength Training: Show up for just one or two short workouts this week.

Make it easy, doable, and don’t let your feelings decide. You’re not asking yourself if you feel like walking. You’re walking anyway. These small steps build confidence and momentum, even when motivation is hiding.

3. Focus on Wins (Big and Small)

When you’re stuck, it’s easy to focus on what’s not going well. But what if you flipped that?

Instead of looking at the scale, focus on the ways you’re already showing up for yourself:

  • Did you drink more water today? That’s a win.
  • Did you go for a walk when you didn’t feel like it? Another win.
  • Did you make a nourishing meal instead of grabbing fast food? Celebrate that!

These small victories matter. They keep you moving forward, and they change the way your brain works. Positive focus shifts your energy and helps you feel motivated again.

4. Reassess and Adjust Your Plan

Midlife brings seasons of transition. Sometimes the plan you’ve been following just isn’t working anymore, and that’s okay.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I overwhelmed right now?
  • What season of life am I in? Do I need to simplify?
  • What are the basics I can come back to?

This might mean:

  • Cutting back on an intense workout routine and focusing on gentle movement.
  • Simplifying meal prep by rotating a few go-to recipes.
  • Saying no to things that are draining your energy so you can prioritize rest and recovery.

Sometimes, less really is more.

5. Practice Self-Compassion

One of the most important tools you have is self-compassion. It’s okay to feel unmotivated. It’s okay to struggle. You’re human, and you’re not alone.

When motivation is gone, here’s what I tell myself and my clients:

  • “Hey girl, it’s okay. You’re doing your best, and I’m proud of you.”
  • “Let’s take one step today. Just one step.”

Judging yourself or beating yourself up only makes things worse. Instead, offer yourself the same kindness you’d give to a dear friend.

6. Prioritize Rest and Recovery

If you’re burned out and exhausted, motivation isn’t going to show up—and that’s a sign that you need rest.

In midlife, our bodies need more recovery time than ever before. Stress, lack of sleep, and overdoing it can make weight loss even harder because it affects your hormones, cortisol, and metabolism.

Here are some simple ways to prioritize recovery:

  • Go to bed earlier (yes, you can say no to late-night Netflix!).
  • Take breaks during your day, even for 5-10 minutes.
  • Say no to things that drain your energy and don’t align with your priorities.
  • Do things that restore you: quiet walks, deep breathing, prayer, or reading a good book.

Show Up, Even Without Motivation

Here’s the truth, friend: motivation is overrated. It comes and goes, but your ability to show up for yourself? That’s where the power lies. You don’t have to feel motivated to make good choices. You just have to take one small step at a time.

When motivation is low, focus on:

  1. Reconnecting to your why.
  2. Taking baby steps (1% improvements).
  3. Celebrating your wins.
  4. Reassessing and simplifying your plan.
  5. Practicing self-compassion.
  6. Prioritizing rest and recovery.

You can keep moving forward, even when you don’t feel like it. And remember: this is just a season.

Your energy and motivation will come back, one step at a time.
